MEDICAL EDUCATION IN INDIA & MEDICAL ADMISSIONS

Medical Colleges in India are a single platform where they provide complete medical education. For this, one has top pass through the medical entrance procedure and secure admission in a medical college or university. Here, they give an overall training pertaining to every aspect of medical care to the potential doctor. It is not easy to secure admission in medical colleges in India and it is very competitive and costly. It is hence advisable to attempt entering into this field if you are really extremely competitive or have extreme funds at your disposal. Alternatively you may also attempt for medical education in countries like China, Russia, Ukraine and so on where medical education is of much higher standard and also cheaper. You will just need to clear MCI exam after securing medical degree to qualify for practicing in India in case you wish so.

What is the rule for Medical Degree Recognition in Medical Education?

As per the Indian Law, a Medical college is in operation only if it has registration and has MCI (Medical Council of India) certification. The government keeps updating list for approved medical colleges every year.

What is Medical College Admissions procedure?

Admissions in medical colleges vary from country to country but as per the current format, the admission process takes place on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Marks in NEET (central level competitive exam).
  • Marks of class XII in final examination.
  • Management seats or donation basis.

We can take either of the above-mentioned criteria into consideration, and in certain cases, the personal interview is also a part of the schedule.

People highly criticize donation in India and this is the only country that authorizes private colleges to sell out medical seats. This is completely on the basis of your payment power and has nothing to do with merits. Though, this is an illegal procedure but this is true and the charges range from Rs.50 lakh to Rs.1 crore for an MBBS degree. But states like Kerala truly believe admissions on merit basis. So, they keep the cut-off low for management seats.

To avoid hassles in 2015, the Government of India appoints Board of Governors (BOGs) after it improvised NEET-UG and NEET-PG. This is supposedly the single door of entry and pass the medical exam. There are exceptions like AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER is set up under parliamentary order and the process is a bit different. However, what the process is the NEET exam has been somewhat successful in getting the main motive to achieve.

Complexity in Indian Medical Medical Education System

Medical education has become a debatable topic of this era. It is seen that there is subsequently increase in the number of enrollment for medical students. The number of government colleges remain the same but the private colleges with high fees, supportive infrastructure, and questionable motives have been considerably increased. The private colleges charge an obscene amount of fees and bypass the entrance exams, this is something that inevitably affects the ordinary Indians. Admissions to medical college should be on the basis of merits instead of money. It is also important to note that quotas and we should keep away money from this system as this would take care of us in the future.

A multiple-choice based question has chances of scoring more rather than others. Moreover, the selection criteria differ from university to university. For some, the questions that come up from biology get more importance while the criteria are very different at other universities. For admission to Mahatma Gandhi Institute, a grade in Gandhian criterion is a must while for Christian Medical College (CMC) there is a sponsored category. The procedure is extremely arduous and hence very few can make up to it.

Medical Education Entrance Exam like MBBS Entrance Test

An entrance exam for medical does not define one’s merit. It’s just a way to fill in the seats. One who does not qualify a medical does not necessarily mean that he is less intelligent. A pass or fails can never define the merit of an individual. It is just a criterion to fill in the medical seats.

Here, the private medical colleges somewhere in the argument act as a boon to many aspire. The ones who could not pass the entrance but can afford to pay the fees get admission through the private college. The private college even facilitates subsidy for government quota students. Now the argument is not on the money, it’s on the level of competency.

Availability of Teachers for Medical Education

The delivery of teachers in institutes both private and the government has taken a huge shift. The private colleges have huge remuneration but no job security. Government colleges have job security but the pay is minimal. It has over the years churned medical education. The facilities provided by the private colleges are much more superior to the government colleges but the government college doctors have more authority in the practices and curriculum than that of the private college. And the ones who have gained good hands-on experience and have high quality prefer to leave the country. This has somewhere down sized the quality and it’s important for both private and government colleges to preserve the teachers.

One with a good mathematical mind doesn’t have to be good at computers. It is visible that the best player in chess is not about the calculation but it’s that he is aware of the best move.

Similarly, the best doctor is someone who has trained himself in the insights into the myriad conditions that affect humankind. This all comes with years of practice and proper training.

Chart Showing Medical Academics

MBBS Entrance Exam for Medical Education

As medical entrance has become a benchmark to prove entrance, the ones who could afford to pay did not mind the investment.

If the medical entrance is a criterion and we take it as a benchmark then interviews should be also a criterion. But in India interviews lack public confidence and fairness is quite an underrated criterion.

It is also important to get a biased free and suspicion free entry into MBBS. The authorities should conduct the assessment fair means and the pay in private colleges should be also low to bring all into the same level.

It is visible that the caste-based system has taken an edge in society. The weaker section qualifies the exams at a later age and becomes incompetent doctors as they have the quota system but still, they are considered to get seats on merit basis. This is still a debatable topic.

CMC over the years has been rated as the best medical college. So it is not that merit is the sole indicator there are other attributes like training and the selection process that define some to qualify the MBBS exam.

Different colleges have different criteria other than merits like religious affiliations or self-funded placements. However, India has a huge pool of knowledge and it matters how you portray and subject it. We should note that we should also keep on checking out the teaching format.

Knowledge is enlightenment and we should address it with the utmost facility and empower it at every section on a fair basis.

Conclusion

The MCI (Medical Council of India) governs the medical education system in India. One needs to comply with its norms and in case of any confusion refer to its rules and guidelines so that they make the right decision and not regret by messing up with career. Once they follow MCI rules and possess its knowledge they will have a secure career.
